BS 5655-1:1986

Safety requirements for passenger and goods electric lifts to safeguard passengers and maintenance personnel against injury. Covers the mechanical and electrical construction of the lift, the relevant structural features of the building in which it is installed and subsequent examination and testing.

Replaces BS 5655-1:1979, which remains current until amendments to the technical annex of EEC Directive 84/529/EEC have been made.

Replaced by BS EN 81-1:1998 but remains current until the implementation of the EU Lift Directive. Until 1 July 1999 new lift installations can conform to either this British Standard or to BS EN 81-1:1998. After 1 July 1999 BS 5655-1:1986, together with BS 5655-11:1989 will apply only for modernization of existing lift installations and BS EN 81-1:1998 will apply to all new installations.
