These requirements cover direct-acting pressure-reducing and pressure restricting valves intended to reduce the water pressure in standpipe systems or in the supply piping for sprinkler systems. These requirements also cover pressure reducing valves that can be used as an indicating control valve in a sprinkler system.

The valves covered by these requirements are intended for use in:
1.Standpipe systems installed in accordance with the Standard for Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems, NFPA 14; or
2.Sprinkler systems installed in accordance with the Standard for Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13.
